I was the among the first generation of children in the United States to have been raised with a computer as a tool. As a 7th Grader at North Little Rock’s Central Junior High School, my Algebra teacher, Mrs. Havlin, introduced me to lab with a few Apple IIe’s. Then I watched “War Games.” Suffice it to say, I’ve, been dreaming of this day since the early 80’s. This morning I sat down with Chat GPT for the first time to “test” it. And while I feel it is quite obvious in what follows that I am dealing with an algorithm trained on a very specific set of language and data, it is also quite clear that I am being reintroduced, almost as a child again, to what strings of code and hardware can become. And I remain, as always, smitten. There is a ghost in the machine.
And everybody knows it.
